Networking is critical, especially for non-target candidates. Most banks fill a significant portion of their analyst classes through employee referrals. Even at target schools, networking differentiates candidates and provides intelligence on group culture and interview processes.

Reach out via LinkedIn or alumni networks with a brief, specific message. Reference something you have in common (school, background, shared interest) and ask for 15-20 minutes. Be respectful of their time, come prepared with thoughtful questions, and always follow up.

Ask about their path into banking, what they enjoy about their group, recent deal experience, and advice for someone in your position. Avoid asking questions you could answer with a Google search. Show genuine curiosity and listen more than you talk.

Aim to speak with three to five people at each bank you are targeting. This gives you enough perspective to write a compelling "why this bank" answer and increases the likelihood that someone will flag your application or provide a referral.
