What it finds

Most people walk into a first round carrying a level they stopped at and never noticed. The test asks 5 real questions, drawn from 1,000+ candidate interviews across 37 firms, and climbs through Fundamentals, Accounting, Capital Structure, Valuation, and Deal Mechanics until your answers stop holding up. Each one shows you the full answer the moment you commit, so a miss is a blind spot you now know about, with the words to fix it.

Everyone gets the same questions at each level. The test measures you, and not the shuffle. Most cards are multiple choice; the last is a flashcard you grade yourself, which is how the rest of practice works, so the test is also your first look at the product.

How it finds your level

  1. 01You open on Accounting. The same first question for everyone. Question one is multiple choice, so the first thing you do grades itself.
  2. 02Right steps up, wrong steps down. The five levels are Fundamentals, Accounting, Capital Structure, Valuation, and Deal Mechanics. A right answer moves the next question up a level and a miss moves it down. Get the first one right and you jump two, straight to Valuation.
  3. 03A level counts when you show it twice. One right pick on a four-option card is a 25% event. A level is cleared by two right answers at it or above it, so a lucky guess never routes you past the foundation.
  4. 04The result is your starting point. Clear Valuation or higher and you go straight into GOBLINMODE. Anything less and you start the GOBLIN100 from question one, swiping past what you already know.

Every topic you answer right lands on your map at +0.50 instead of the usual +0.15, so two right answers on one topic close it outright. A miss costs the usual 0.15 and comes back.

Where it sends you

No score and no percentile. Five questions can honestly separate two groups and nothing finer, so the result is a recommendation: the most efficient place to start on the technicals from where you are.

GOBLINMODE. Clear Valuation or higher and you go straight in. It serves the next question off your weaknesses: what you miss comes back until it sticks, and the mix keeps moving as your map fills in.

The GOBLIN100. Anything less and you start here: the first hundred technical questions you should be able to answer, in order, from what a bank assumes you know on day one to pitching a stock. Swipe past the ones you already have.

Why it starts with a test

The mission, from our manifesto: engineer the most efficient path to a banking offer. On the technicals, the efficient path is the one that starts from where you are, and nobody can build that path without measuring the starting point first. Five questions is how we measure it. Everything after them is built from that reading: your map, your route, and the next question you are served.

Common questions

Is the investment banking practice test free?+

Yes, and no card is required. The same goes for what comes after it: the free plan is the GOBLIN100 with no daily limit, plus 5 GOBLINMODE questions a day.

Is this the same as a bank's online assessment?+

No. The online assessments banks send after you apply are numerical reasoning, situational judgment and recorded-video screens. This is a technical test on the questions asked in the interview itself: accounting, capital structure, valuation and deal mechanics.

How many questions is it, and how long does it take?+

There are 5 questions and no timer. Most cards are multiple choice and the last is a flashcard you grade yourself, which is how the rest of practice works, so the test doubles as your first five cards.

Do I get a score?+

No score and no percentile. Five questions can honestly separate two groups and nothing finer, so the result is a route: straight to GOBLINMODE, or the GOBLIN100 from question one. Every topic you got right also carries bonus credit on your map.

Can I skip it?+

Yes. Skip is at the end of the rail. You go straight to practice, nothing is lost, and your map starts empty instead of with credit on it.

Can I take it again?+

No. It runs once, on an account that has not practiced yet. After that your map tracks every topic you touch, and that is the ongoing measurement.

What topics does it cover?+

Fundamentals, Accounting, Capital Structure, Valuation, and Deal Mechanics, in that order of difficulty. Everyone opens on Accounting; where you go from there depends on your answers.

Where do the questions come from?+

Real interviews at Wall Street firms: 1,000+ candidate interviews across 37 firms, recruiting cycles from 2015 to 2026. The test asks the same questions of everyone at each level, chosen from that bank, so it measures you and not the shuffle.

Five questions decide where you start.
