Campus Finance Clubs and IB Recruiting: How to Pick One
What campus finance clubs actually do for IB recruiting, how to tell which ones at your school place people, and how to break in without one.
Most recruiting advice tells you to join the right clubs and stops there. Nobody tells you how to spot the difference between a real one and a room with good speakers.
What you find depends on your school
A large state school usually has exactly one banking club, and it is often affiliated with the school or run by it outright. A target or semi-target has a handful at different levels, with new ones starting all the time, each running its own recruiting process.
MBA programs work differently again. There is one club and nearly everyone joins it. The school runs the whole thing. It exists to organize the process for the class, and it screens almost nobody out. Undergrad is a free-for-all next to that, which is why the selection problem lands on you.

What clubs do
What sits under the label varies a lot. On the surface most of them bring in speakers and facilitate banks coming to campus. Past that, the useful ones train members on technicals, run mock interviews, and get you in front of someone for a first coffee chat.
Focus differs too. Some clubs are explicitly about getting people into banking. Others are oriented around investing, or around a specific area like credit or restructuring. Neither is better in the abstract, but they are not interchangeable, and the name on the door will not tell you which one you are looking at.
The resume line and the network do different jobs
On the resume, club membership tells a reader you got through another screen. They know somebody interviewed you to get you in, so the line does a small amount of work before anyone reads the rest of the page. At some schools there is a club a recruiter will know by name and bring up in the interview.
The bigger value never shows up on paper. You find out when applications actually open and what last year's process looked like, which is the difference between preparing and guessing. Club alumni are part of that same network.
