A banker reads your resume in about ten seconds. The format is solved: use the template, follow the rules, then stop iterating.

Overall

These rules govern the whole page. The section rules that follow are applications of them.

One page. Always.
One line per bullet. If it wraps, trim words until it fits.
Three sections: Education, Experience, Additional. Education leads while you are a student, recent grad, or MBA candidate, or when the school brand is the selling point. Otherwise Experience moves up.
Strongest first, at every level. Everything inside a section is ranked. The best bullet leads each role, and the strongest roles carry the most bullets.
Experience is the longest section. A section earns its space by how much it sells you. An Education block that runs long is taking lines from Experience.
Everything appears once. A club listed in Education does not come back under community service. When something could live in two places, keep the line with the more specific role and cut the bare mention.
Nothing else goes on it. No objective or summary statement, no skills grid, no "references available upon request," no photo. The header and the three sections are the whole document.
Do not inflate. Anything on the page is fair game to get grilled on. Claim a DCF you did not build and it gets noticed, and it costs you trust for the rest of the conversation.

What goes in it: name, city + state (ZIP is fine), phone, professional email. No street address.
Use the name you use everywhere else, matching LinkedIn and your applications.
Give a phone number you actually answer. A school email is fine while you are a student.

Education

Official program names. Use the school's own naming, and list both programs of a joint degree.
Compress the block. Merge lines until it is tight: GPA sits right-justified on the degree line, and concentrations are named without the label.

GPA: list the cumulative. Adding major GPA is fine when it is significantly different, but cumulative is the one they expect.
Concentrations and honors: include them only if they strengthen the target story. Honors should be selective or recognizable without explanation. Delete the filler awards.
Coursework is usually the first cut. A line of course names costs more space than the signal it adds. Keep it only when it is your only proof of fit, and cut it outright once you have real experience.
High school comes off once you are in college. The degree in progress is the credential now, GPA and honors included.
Leadership over membership. "Founder," "Technical Lead," or "VP" tells the reader more than a long list of clubs. Put the role first, then the club in italics.

Experience

What belongs here

Jobs only. A bootcamp, a training program, or a volunteer gig is not a full work experience, and next to real roles it reads as filler. Move these to Additional (a "Finance Engagement" line works).
Stack roles under one employer when you were promoted. Make the progression instant to scan: title, team, dates. Do not repeat the company name.
Project subheads give context for consulting, investing, or product work: a confidential but specific client or project line, with your action tied to the client's need. Skip internal process detail unless it proves judgment or impact.

Choosing the bullets

Draft four to six, keep around four. Write four to six candidates for each of your strongest roles, then cut to the best. Older roles get one or two, if they still earn the line.
Vary the bullets. Show analysis, leadership, client influence, and execution. Never three versions of "supported the team."

Writing the bullet

The formula: strong verb + specific work + scale or scope + result. All four, every time. The result is what anchors the bullet to business value. Drop it and the bullet floats.

Say it out loud first. Nobody says "spearheaded" in an interview. It only shows up on resumes, so it reads as derived the moment a banker sees it, and it is one of the first words crossed out. Say what actually happened.
Swap the rest of resume-ese for what you would actually say.

- Utilized → used
- Leveraged → used (leverage stays when it is the finance term: LBO, leverage ratio)
- Streamlined → simplified
- Enhanced → improved
- Fostered → built
- Robust, comprehensive → name the real scope
- Meticulous attention to detail → cut it, show the catch you made
- Played a pivotal role → say what you did
"Reported" beats "researched." Researched reads like someone sent you off to a cupboard to go figure something out. Reported reads like the work landed somewhere and someone used it. Pick the verb that points at the deliverable, not the process behind it.

Tense: present for the current role, past for everything else.

Numbers

Put a number in every bullet you can. Revenue, users, team size, deal size, CAGR, cost saved, cycle time, deals analyzed, models built, assets covered.
Round it. Do not move the real number to make it sound measured. Extra significant figures do not help. Round down, then mark it with a plus: $20mm+, 40mm+ users. Save ~ for the rare figure a floor would misstate.
Big numbers use mm and bn, lowercase, no space, dollar sign first: $20mm, $1.5bn, 40mm users.
No figure on hand? Draft it with an X ("screened X targets"). Fill in the real figure or a reasonable estimate. You rarely know the exact number. When even the estimate is a guess, hedge: 20+ deals, 5%+.

Additional

What belongs here

No fixed set of lines. It depends on what you have: leadership, service, selective programs and activities, non-work experience with real impact. It is not a dumping ground.
Cut commodity skills. Excel, PowerPoint, a semester of Java: every applicant has them, so the line says nothing. A skill earns its spot only if it sets you apart for the seat you want.

Writing the lines

A label, then proof. Lead with a professional differentiator ("Infrastructure tech specialist," "Spanish speaker"), then a personal one: "Endurance athlete: 2x Ironman" beats "running." The goal is a line they want to ask about.
Every entry needs an outcome, the same as an Experience bullet: led, built, earned, selected. Wins, rankings, and numbers do this work well, because a proof point begs a story.
Say the language level. A bare language name hides it: write "conversational Mandarin," or a bolded "Mandarin speaker" with the proof behind it. English is assumed; leave it off.
Fill the line. A short line wastes its row: "Languages: English, French" leaves most of the width empty. Give the line more proof, or pair two bolded label-and-proof sets on one row.
Interests go last. It is the least important line, and that is also where it works: a reader who scans to the bottom lands right on it.

The most common mistake

Resumes are too complicated. Simplify everything. It is really important, and it is the rule people refuse to follow.
They over-explain, because they believe they need to be truly understood on the page. They do not.
You lose some fidelity when you cut that hard, and that is fine. The reader needs to know you had a coding job and did roughly this kind of thing.
The rest belongs in the conversation, where you can actually talk about it.
Your resume is more of a conversation starter and a first impression than a full account of you. Write it that way.
