How does the IB recruiting pipeline actually work as a sales funnel?

How the IB recruiting pipeline works like a sales funnel: keep pursuing every lead until you get a clear no, because you only need one yes to break in.

You're in sales now

You are the product. Recruiting is a numbers game: move prospects through stages until you close one.

Three principles run the whole funnel:

  • Silence is not rejection. Unless you hear "no," treat it as an open opportunity.
  • Detach from outcomes. Focus on consistent, professional persistence.
  • One yes wins. A single offer is the only metric that matters.

Top of funnel: volume and resonance

The channels here are coffee chats, info sessions, and broad networking. Every bank is a potential lead. Cast a wide net, build momentum, and find the people who click with you.

Nobody can tell you how many chats it takes to land one offer. There is no way to really know, and it varies a lot by person and by bank, since some banks like a lot of volume. Treat the number as unknowable and keep going until something converts or you get a clear no.

What works at this stage is not a script. People remember how you make them feel, so drop the rehearsed act. Commonalities create lasting connections; look for them. Bankers who genuinely like you become advocates later.

Lock in your story before the volume starts: who you are, what drives you, why banking. See Banking Stories and Whys.

Take every chat. Attend every event. Follow up politely, and keep following up. No self-selecting out.
