The Opening Question

"Tell me about yourself" (TMAY, in recruiting shorthand) is a broad background prompt, and it is the one answer in the entire interview you can build completely before you walk in. The interviewer is asking for a story. The resume already lists what you did; what it cannot show is why those lines sit next to each other. Give them the arc: who you are, what changed, and why banking is the logical next step. Sixty to ninety seconds, then stop.

The structure that carries it is the HERO framework: Setup, Challenge, Turning Point, Resolution, Future Path.

One exception before you build anything. If the prompt is literally "walk me through your resume," do not force HERO onto it. That answer is chronological (school, first job, pivot, now) and it tracks the page in front of the interviewer, which is why the resume itself has to be clean before you rehearse the words.

A Worked Answer

An MBA candidate pivoting out of technology consulting:

"I'm Jerome Powell, an MBA candidate at Chicago Booth. I studied computer science at Duke and spent four years at Accenture advising CTOs on cloud strategy (Setup).

During a datacenter post-merger integration, I saw capital allocation decisions determine which teams received investment and which products got cut, but I did not understand the mechanics (Challenge). A corporate finance elective showed me there was an entire industry dedicated to those decisions (Turning Point).

I joined the investment club, led technology coverage, and interned at a boutique to learn the ropes (Resolution).

Now I am targeting banks with strong technology practices. Moelis San Francisco is at the top of my list (Future Path)."

About a hundred words, one or two sentences per slot. The Turning Point is an event. And the answer ends on a named target instead of trailing off into "and that's why I'm excited to be here today."

An undergrad answer still needs the awakening beat. Build it so the whole thing reads as though it was always a straight shot: in high school you saw something, you went on the journey, and now you are here.

What the Interviewer Is Grading

Structure: The arc moves through the slots in order and closes. If the interviewer has to ask "so what is it you want to do?" when you finish, it did not close.

Character: The protagonist of this story should seem like someone who would go into banking and succeed. Reveal the traits in what the protagonist does: analytical thinking, initiative, commercial awareness, drive.

Sourcing: Name the class, the person, the job, or the deal that made the pivot real. A named source is checkable.

Delivery: Pacing and tone feed into how the answer performs in the room. An arc that is sound on paper can still lose the room, so give it real energy and tell it like a story.

Drilling the Answer

Write the five slot names down the left side of a page and bullet underneath each one. Then put the page away and say the answer out loud. Record it, and play it back for pace and energy. Reading your own arc silently tells you nothing about whether it survives contact with a room.
